HUNTER schools will start receiving new computers within weeks after the Federal Government committed to fund its election promise of a computer for every student in years 9 to 12.

Students and teachers praised the $1.2 billion computers package yesterday.

Callaghan College Jesmond Senior Campus principal Ian Nebauer said he welcomed any program that delivered much-needed resources.

"We're entering a digital age and the way that our society operates, students are going to need to have fast access to information," Mr Nebauer said.

Callaghan College Jesmond Senior Campus will benefit from the initial roll-out of computers along with other Hunter schools identified on a needs basis.

Callaghan year 11 students Jayd Lynch and Jessica Rykers said access to fast computers was essential for most subjects.

"They are a basic requirement, particularly for assignments and IT-related subjects," Jayd said.

Eventually, every student in years 9 to 12 will have access to a computer and high-speed broadband.

"It would allow you to do more work individually rather than have to book into a room," Jessica said.

"Most of our assignments are done on Microsoft Word, which we back up on a flash drive. If we had our own computers it would reduce the risk of losing work."
