CLASSROOM resource kits, links to the Board of Studies syllabus and incentives such as improved prizes and educational excursions have encouraged more than 80 schools to enter The Herald's 2004 School Newspaper competition.

Some vacancies remain in the primary and secondary divisions.

This year, primary and high schools will compile the content for a two-page newspaper.

These stories, illustrations, photographs and headlines will be put through The Herald's layout and editing system then published in a specified edition.

Schools receive for free six copies of every edition of The Herald that contains a school newspaper, plus up to 500 copies of the paper on the day the school's entry appears.

Overall winning schools in primary and secondary categories win $2500 computer packages from Domayne Kotara; primary and secondary winners of the inaugural Young Writer's Award receive a $2500 computer package from Domayne Kotara; individual achievers in writing, photography, illustration and advertising design win $150 accounts with the Newcastle Permanent Building Society; all participating students receive a certificate and each school receives its printing-press plates.

Any teachers or principals interested in registering their school for the competition in 2004 should contact Eve Nesmith at The Herald at enesmith@theherald.com.au or on 49795973.
